Travel Guide To Hue, Vietnam

By Maureen Yuene

Are you looking for a nice location for your Vietnam holidays? Hue, the former capital of Vietnam, is known as the Imperial City. It is divided between the older fortified Citadel, containing almost everything interesting, and the new, smaller sprawl that has developed across the river. The new side contains most of the facilities, the hotels, restaurants, businesses and banks. Tourists visit to Hue to explore the old Imperial complex, the Citadel and the Forbidden City, the pagodas, and the many tombs of the emperors that lie a few kilometres south of the city. Each tomb is a walled compound containing temples, palaces, and lakes.

Getting there

From Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City - take the overnight bus/train to Hue. Either way, you can stop by this place as a transit in between the two more famous cities. From Phu Bai Airport (15km from the city) you can fly to/from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

What to do and see.

Hue Riders: Motorcycling through the villages, rice fields, mountains, valleys, rivers, beaches and meet with local people along the way. A motorbike really is a great way to get around the country given the appalling state of many of Vietnam country's roads though to somebody's credit, many are getting some kind of upgrade now and contrary to what one may assume, you do not have to be an experienced rider to navigate most of these roads.

Tomb of Khai Dinh: Breathtaking in its ornate glass and porcelain opulence, this emperor's tomb is one of the area's most flamboyant attractions. Emperor Khai Dinh (1885-1925) ruled Vietnam for 9 years. His tomb took 11 years to complete. Construction began in 1920 and was completed in 1931.
