The Galapagos Islands are an island chain located near Latin America in the eastern portion of the Pacific Ocean. The Galapagos Islands are comprised of thirteen main isles and innumerable smaller ones. People reside on multiple islands. The Galapagos Islands first became well-known when a famous scientist performed research there in the first half of the nineteenth century. In modern times, the Galapagos Islands are most renowned for the vast array of wildlife that can be found on them.

Many of the species that inhabit the Galapagos Islands are incredibly fascinating. A variety of these plants and animals are native to the Galapagos area and can't be seen in any other locations on the globe. Because of this, the islands are enjoying a surge in popularity as a vacation locale for nature lovers who reside all over the world. A small sampling of the wildlife that can be found on the Galapagos Islands include marine iguanas, sea lions, Galapagos tortoises, flamingos, Galapagos penguins, blue-footed and red-footed boobies, and flightless cormorants.

A trait that both vacationers and scientists find intriguing about the Galapagos Islands' wildlife is that the animals seem to possess little fear of people. This is a unique trait for animals that have not been domesticated. There are multiple theories that attempt to explain why a fear of people didn't develop in these creatures.

A common notion is that because the Galapagos Islands are rather isolated from the rest of the world and people did not destroy the natural habitats of the animals there, the creatures never had a viable reason to fear human contact. One of the other popular theories is that since the Galapagos Islands have no large predators, the animals simply haven't developed a natural instinct to fear any other organisms.

The Galapagos Islands have one of the most gorgeous landscapes in the world. Most of the isles have beautiful coral reefs and many forms of underwater creatures in the water just off their beaches. This makes the Galapagos Islands one of the most popular snorkeling and scuba diving destinations on earth. If you plan to attempt either of these activities while you are in the Galapagos Islands, you need to locate a reputable instructor to go with you on your adventure.

Since most of the isles in the Galapagos Islands are volcanic, their rugged terrain is great for those who like to hike. There are all levels of trails, which means that people who simply want to walk around and enjoy the scenery and those who want to hike intensely can all find the perfect path.

If you would like to plan a trip to the Galapagos Islands, you should schedule an appointment with your travel agent or perform some online research. The Galapagos Islands offer activities your entire family will love.
